Nearly 2,200,000,000 or almost 30% of the people on earth are now overweight and many are obese, creating a global health crises according to the New England Journal of Medicine and the World Health Organization. Each year over 4,000,000 people die of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers that are associated to being overweight. In the past 15 years deaths linked to being overweight have risen 28%.
600,000,000 adults and 108,000,000 children are obese. Since 1980 obesity is up 100% according to the World Health Organization. And while much of the world is becoming overweight over 800,000,000 people go to bed hungry.
Much of this weight increase is linked to diets rich in processed foods and poor diets and a sedentary lifestyle. In many developing countries people are leaving behind traditional vegetable rich diets in favor of processed foods. These new diets are filled with more sugar and fats and are prominent in urbanized areas. World-wide the prices of processed foods have fallen and the prices of vegetables have risen.
