I recently saw an article about Jeremy the snail. This snail is unique – one in a million actually, because his shell curls counterclockwise – placing his sexual organs on the left. Snails have no gender, but in order for them to mate, their organs must line up. Each and every one of us is unique in our own way. In some cases that may set us apart from others – and yet there is always a reason and a gift as nothing happens without purpose in the grand scheme.
The scientist studying Jeremy felt sorrow for this lonely creature – and so went on a worldwide hunt to find him a mate. Not one – but two candidates were found – Lefty and Toneau – Toneau residing in a snail farm and being prepared for his/her intended fate as Escargot.
And so Jeremy was to be lonely no more. Upon being united with his betrothed(s) however he went into his hibernation period – as did they. Scientists waited excitedly, with hope of learning a great deal more about these creatures, genetics and the effects of asymmetry in nature.
But as all three emerged from their “naps” – it seems that Jeremy was a bit – well- sluggish. Leaving Lefty and Toneau to discover each other and immediately begin mating! Within a short time hundreds of babies came forth – and they can often be seen climbing all over their Uncle Jeremy.
A mate has still not been found for Jeremy but maybe one day…. the scientists continue to look and have vowed to do so until he passes. In the meantime we hope that the companionship of this extended family may give him some pleasure.
And what do I take away from this – well:
• There is always hope, no matter the odds.
• Sometimes the answers may not come in the ways you expect – so allow for that and appreciate what comes.
• It’s always good to evaluate whether hesitance or inactivity feels like the best choice. If not – better step up your game!
• Even when facing a plate of escargot (which I happen to love), stop and give thanks for the lives of all that are about to nourish you – for there is nothing too great or too low to be appreciated.
