My 13 year old daughter came home from school and said she had a joke.
Q: Why did Adele cross the road? A: To sing, "Hello” from the other side!
I didn’t get it. I called my best friend, who is exactly my age, and told her the joke. She thought it was cute. She got it. I realized I was out of it. I was old and uninformed. And worst of all I didn’t connect and relate to my daughter. UGH.
I immediately got a subscription to Seventeen Magazine. It was full of quizzes, fashion, hair suggestions and beauty tips. It was vapid, shallow and meaningless. It was full of gossip and had stories about how red skittles were better than green (or maybe it was the other way around) and how to photo-shop pictures to look thinner.
This is everything I abhor and this is the world my daughters are growing up in. And I am unaware that this is my daughter’s world. So I sat my daughter down and asked her if she would like to attend the Women’s Empowerment group I joined. She had no interest. She asked me if she could get a tattoo. I began to sweat.
