I am not the kind of person that sues people. I think karma takes care of everything, including me. I am an interior decorator and I tend to put in way more time on projects than I bill my clients for, most of it searching for the perfect pieces or fabrics. I always think I give my clients the best value. So when a large client simply wouldn’t pay for a project I had to bring in my lawyer.
I am not inclined to like lawyers. I believe that, for many lawyers, the way to make them smile for a picture is, “say fees”. Since they bill me for every second they are even thinking about my case, I always think they are greedy. This is the first time I have ever sued anybody.
In the end my client paid the $24,000 he owed me. My lawyer’s bill was $17,000. Seems it took him 56 hours to resolve the case that never went to trail. I told my best friend about it when the lawyer’s bill came and she said, well, you know Doris, that’s the reason sharks won‘t bite a lawyer; professional courtesy.
Now I have every lawyer reading this hating me. I know a lawyer who spends a great deal of time doing pro-bono work. He’s one of the kindest and most generous people I know. Unfortunately he lives in another state. He once told me that it takes 3 lawyers to change a light bulb; One to climb the ladder, one to shake it, and one to sue the ladder company. Guess they all know their reputation. My eldest daughter is now thinking of becoming a lawyer. Now she’s excited because she saw that they make $300 an hour. That’s way better than the $10.95 she makes now.
