Money Anxiety and how to avoid the implosion

Money Anxiety

Studies tell us that women suffer more money anxiety than men. In good times over 60% of the adult population experiences money anxiety. In bad economic times that number rises to over 80%. In severe recessions that number can approach 90%.

Think your job is in jeopardy? Think the checking account balance is not enough to pay the rent? Think that property tax bill penalty is a sure thing for being late? You’ve skipped 2 service appointments for your car. Will it break down? Going to the dentist isn’t even being considered?

You may either be experiencing a mild sense of discomfort or a pervasive sense of panic. Maybe you think everything is about to implode and fall off the cliff. Your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure just went up 3 notches.

Meditation may not pay that bill but it will lower your blood pressure.

Hypnosis may not get the car serviced but it has been shown to relax you and provide suggestive coping mechanisms.

Psychologists are useful for broadening your understanding that your monetary worth is not tied to your self-worth. Shame is very destructive and unwarranted.

Set a budget and stick to it. A lot of stress comes from lack of certainty and a feeling of being out of control. Find your favorite small treat and allow yourself that as a reward for sticking to your budget each week.

Find free or inexpensive things to do like visit a museum or park, play sports, paint, or hike. Avoid the shopping sprees and stay away from on-line shopping.

Take up knitting.

Only have one credit card and only use it from emergencies or necessary on-line purchases. Using cash will let you feel what things really cost.

Cancel your massage therapist and have your spouse rub your shoulders.

See what this current situation is teaching you about you and your expression in the world. You wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t a purpose to it. It is the foundation for what you are building your future on.

Stay present. In the present moment you are not falling off a cliff. Most probably you are safe and your belly is full.
