When the heat is on, you can still keep your cool the Ayurvedic way, which includes balancing your diet and lifestyle according to the season. Try these simple and natural tips to stay relaxed and healthy this summer.
1) Favor cooling food and drinks that are in season. Heat-busting fresh juices include watermelon, cucumber, and pomegranate; or reach for a cooling coconut water. Add new foods to your diet: coconut-mint dhal, pomegranate chutney, lime Brussels sprouts, baked fennel, lauki (a type of green gourd available at most Indian grocery stores), cucumber, zucchini, or pasta with dill and thyme cream sauce. Favor fresh, sweet, juicy fruits such as melons or pineapple. And for a soothing nightcap before bed, try a cup of warm milk blended with a spoonful of Organic Rose Petal Spread.
2) Keep things moving. Occasional constipation can cause internal heat to build up, which can create even more heat during the summer season. To keep your digestion and elimination moving, drink plenty of pure water and room-temperature Organic Cooling Pitta Tea. Add more squash, cantaloupe, and watermelon to your diet. And take Herbal Cleanse (Pitta) or Organic Digest Tone (Triphala Plus)(Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) to promote elimination. 3) Minimize stress: rest and relax. Avoid heavy or stressful exercise, especially in the summer heat, which can overheat your body. Instead, try gentle yoga, walking, and swimming in cool, but not cold, water. Aim to exercise in the early morning or evening — just not during the heat of the day or when the sun is at its brightest. If you are feeling overheated, physically or emotionally, give yourself a quick cooling sensation with a few drops of Blissful Heart Aroma Oil and/or Cooling Pitta Aroma Oil in a diffuser.
4) Protect the skin you are in. Avoid chemical-laden, artificial skin creams, lotions, soaps or shampoos, as these can directly aggravate Pitta and increase sensitivity to sun damage. When you do go out in the sun, cover up with sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, and wear breathable organic cotton clothing. If you have eaten spicy foods or you are emotionally upset, it may be best to stay out of the sun until you have cooled off. A few spritzes of Organic Rose Water several times a day can soothe and cool your skin and emotions.
