Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, is a firm believer that hard work alone is not the answer to fulfillment or success.
In our society we are conditioned from childhood that hard work is the answer. But Reid believes grit, ingenuity and the intelligence to see what works and what doesn’t is the answer. His method is recognizing how to conserve and focus energy. He describes it as a kind of laziness; expending energy on what gets results. Sheer force, hard work or persistently going after something that isn’t the solution won’t give you the results you are looking for. He says, "You want to minimize friction and find the most effective, most efficient way forward. You might actually have more grit if you treat your energy as a precious commodity.”
Success isn’t just running the long race. It’s more about trying different things, avoiding the traps and zig zagging through the debris fields. When you see that something doesn’t work or that there is a new possibility or a unique way of looking at something – a new solution, you go for it. Reid Hoffman says, Grit is "the ability to generate an endless supply of Plan B’s."
